Origin
Chinese Hamster Ovary cells (CHO) are one of the most used mammalian cells in biological and medical research due to their great tolerance in changes and resistance to human viruses. CHO cells are accessible in two forms: suspended and adherent.
CHO cells have another kind known as CHO-K1, which is generated from the CHO cell line and is often adherent. This CHO-K1 has similar characteristics to CHO, but has a few differences, such as the number of chromosomes and the fact that it normally grows in adherent form.
Characteristics of CHO cells
CHO cells have an average diameter of 14-15 μm. CHO cells are diploid, with 22 chromosomes, whereas CHO-K1 has 21.
They are notable for their rapid growth, having a doubling time of 12 hours. This makes CHO cells useful for bulk culture and large-scale cell proliferation.
These cells are used primarily for their stability, which makes them helpful in the pharmaceutical industry and GMP facilities. They are highly tolerant of variations in pH, temperature, pressure, and more. They are also resistant to human viruses due to their hamster origin.
Despite having different characteristics from human cells, CHO cells are also quite comparable to human cells, which is why they are primarily utilized in the production of human medications and treatments.
Culturing condition
In 37℃ and 5% CO2 condition in an incubator
Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) / F-12 or RPMI commonly used for culturing
Usage
Because CHO cells and human cells are similar in how they undergo post-translational modification, CHO cells are frequently employed in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly for creating therapeutic monoclonal antibodies.
CHO cells are commonly used in the field of research and development for studying gene function and regulation as well as for testing the safety and efficacy of newly developed medications.
Because of their stability and FDA-approved references, CHO cells have been a common cell type for many studies and are still the most widely utilized cells.
