What are U2OS cells?
U2OS cells are one of the first and most commonly used cell lines, originating from a 15-year-old girl with osteosarcoma in 1964. These epithelial cells produced from bone are known as the first human cell lines from a mesenchymal tumors [1].
Characteristics of U2OS cells
Unlike normal cells, U2OS cells have a polyploid karyotype, a state where chromosomes are more than diploid (diploid : paired in two chromosomes).
Applications applied
U2OS cells, like other cell lines, are frequently used in cancer research since they are derived from bone cancer. As a result, they tend to be used to study the biological responses of osteosarcoma to therapies. They are also beneficial in drug development, apoptosis studies, and genetic study to further explore numerous fields in discovering therapies for many cancers [2].
Its particular characteristics make U2OS cells more adaptable in cancer research due to their stable luciferase expression, making them more useful for in vivo bioluminescence imaging to not only study cancer but also monitor treatment activity [1].
