Pipette: Types and How to Use

A pipette is a laboratory tool used to accurately measure and transfer small volumes of liquids. Commonly used in scientific research, clinical laboratories, and chemical experiments, pipettes come in various types, including manual and electronic versions. Types include micropipettes for precise measurements in microliters, volumetric pipettes for fixed volumes, and serological pipettes for larger volumes. Proper technique and calibration are essential for accurate results.

Types of pipette

There are various types of pipettes available. Below is the list of a few pipettes commonly seen in many laboratories.

  1. Micropipette

  2. Electronic pipette

  3. Volumetric pipette

  4. Serological pipette

How to use a micropipette

Today, the most used pipette type is the micropipette. These are commonly seen in many laboratories because of their accuracy and ease of use. From one digit to four significant figures of volume can be measured. On the top of the plunger, the number indicates the maximum volume the pipette could obtain.

Below is an image of the micropipette and its main components.

Plunger is a button used to draw up and dispense liquid.

Tip ejector button is used to eject the disposable tip from the pipette tip.

Friction ring or Volume knob is used to set the desired volume. The volume is displayed on the pipette body.

Tip ejector pushes the disposable tip for removal.

[Steps]

  1. Adjusting the volume: Although each brand has a slightly different way, adjusting the volume is usually done by rotating either the plunger or the volume adjustment dial.

  2. Attaching a tip: Attach a tip by pressing the tip cone of the pipette to the tip. Make sure the tip is securely attached.

  3. Drawing up liquid: There are two stop points when pressing the plunger. The first stop is the point where the desired volume will be obtained. The second stop is to remove all the remaining sample from the pipette tip. To load the desired volume, make sure to stop at the first point. Push the plunger to the first stop, then put the tip inside the liquid. Then, slowly remove your finger to draw up.

  4. Loading liquid: After drawing up, place the tip to wherever the liquid should be loaded. Then, push the plunger gently to the first stop.

  5. Remove the tip: To remove the used tip, press the ejector button.
